It's been 2 weeks since me, Brad and Neil made the trip across to Preston for Toy Soldier and basically I did not do well!
To cut a long story short I finished 38th out of 40 players - not where I'd hoped to place but the way the scoring was handled in this tournament meant that as soon as you'd lost a couple of games you were potentially 64 points adrift of the top players (as the top you could score on a match was 32 points). I only managed to win the 4th game out of the 5 but in that game everything fell into place and the army worked like a dream, the others were a pretty mixed bag but I did make quite a few mistakes.
My biggest problem seems to be that I have a tendency to hang back when I should be getting in my opponents face and end up getting shot up or I try to be very aggressive when I should really be hanging back a bit and bringing my firepower to bear.
I've taken this poor performance as a learning experience, I fought 'nids for the first time and even though I got beat on I learned allot from the game. I'm still pretty new to playing the Blood Angels and I'm hoping that this is the main reason why I didn't do so well, we will be playing at another tournament down in Oxford in September and my current leaning is to stick with this list and use the games I'll have there as more "testing" (as I don't think I'm going to have chance for many games in the interim) and then decide whether I want to make any changes.

I did my first 2 proper matches tonight and learned a heavy lesson. Tau in close combat is baaaaaad! Sorry to hear about your tournament, seems each game with the Tau is a learning lesson. I'm going to be reading through all the battle reports I can find for tips and tricks. For a hit and run army, Tau are so poor at the running part (unless it's from a failed leadership test)it's kinda gut wrenching. What was the point size and army list you took with you?
ReplyDeleteWell it was a 1750 point tournament but it was the first time I'd taken my Blood Angels Jump Pack list for it's first tournament outing, I'll just say I had a great time on all of the games and hopefully I'll do better next time!
ReplyDeleteThe hanging back may be because you used to play Tau. I did the same thing in my first two games with Space Wolves after playing Tau for the last couple of years. Not being aggressive enough is the first two things my two friends commented on.
ReplyDeleteYou have a good list, so I think all you need is more experience with it, and the tournament placings will vastly improve.
What's the tournament in Oxford, is it the 40k Singles on the 4th Sept ? If so, you may enjoys wiping my Tau off the board if we meet :)

Yes it is the 4th Sept one although the chances of any of us beating anyone may be slim as we're driving down from Doncaster on the day! I am looking forwards to it, should be a good day!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact I need more experience, it's one of the reasons why I don't want to make any changes to the list until I've had more practice (the urge to squeeze Mephiston in is strong however!!).
I can completely empathize with you, Yukka. I took a Dante-centric (mostly) Jump Pack army to our local game store's tournament this past weekend, and I fared rather poorly as well. It was a three-rounder (which is more common over here than 5 or 7 rounders.)
ReplyDeleteI think the problem we're both having is that we're accustomed to more cautious armies. I play Mechdar and a Pedro Sternguard list, so I'm used to a very shooty, dodgey playstyle. I mean, I got beaten by Grey Knights and tied with Witch Hunters for crying out loud! LOL
Anyway, your list looks pretty good, I think you just need more practice with it.
